Curriculum

The School Year

The school runs for two 16-week semesters, September-May. The school’s holiday and break schedule coincides with the Ann Arbor Public Schools’ calendar. Both classes meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The 3’s class meets 9:15 am – 11:30 a.m., and the 4’s class meets 12:45 am – 3:15 p.m.

The School Day

3’s Class Schedule:

  • 9:15 - Arrival/Free Choice Time
  • 9:25 - Circle Time with whole class
  • 9:40 - Free Play (students switch rooms halfway through this time)
  • 10:25 - Clean-up
  • 10:30 - Circle Time with whole class/Music Class on Wednesdays
  • 10:45 - Snack Time
  • 11:00 - Pack up/Outdoor Play Time
  • 11:30 - Dismissal

4’s Class Schedule:

  • 12:45 - Arrival/Free Choice Time
  • 12:55 - Circle Time with whole class
  • 1:15 - Free Play (students switch rooms halfway through this time)
  • 2:05 - Clean-up
  • 2:10 - Circle Time with whole class/Music Class on Wednesdays
  • 2:30 - Snack Time
  • 2:45 - Pack up/Outdoor Play Time
  • 3:15 - Dismissal

Music Program

Mrs. Beth (www.LessonsByBeth.com) visits the classroom weekly to get the children moving, dancing, singing, and playing to music. In class with Mrs. Beth, children learn:

  • Folk songs
  • Dances (alone, with group, and with partners)
  • Fine motor skills through finger plays
  • Large motor skills (i.e. growing and shrinking to show pitch)
  • Acting through songs that tell a story
  • Musical movement and spatial awareness (how to move to music appropriately)
  • Beginning music reading (rhythms)
  • Songs in foreign languages (i.e. French, Spanish, Hebrew, Sign Language)
  • Sequencing through songs and dances (what comes next?)
  • Simple math skills through song (i.e. counting, addition, subtraction, skip counting, multiplication)

Field Trips

Field trips are usually scheduled once a month. Past field trips have included:

  • Matthei Botanical Gardens
  • Natural History Museum (U-M)
  • Fire Station
  • Wild Swan Theater
  • Real Life Farm
  • Ann Arbor Public Library

Age Requirements

3‘s Class: Children must be three by September 1st of the year of entrance.

4‘s Class: Children must be four by September 1st of the year of entrance.

In both classes, fall birthdays will be considered on a case by case basis

All Children are expected to be potty trained upon entering school. If you have concerns please talk with Mrs. Archer.
